Albert followed behind them and kept the door opened so the humans had some light. Adrian’s eyes granted him sight in the pitch blackness of the basement. They reached the bottom and he flicked on a light switch. A single dim bulb flickered on in the center of a square, dirt-floor room. The area occupied four hundred square feet, and its rock-piled walls bespoke its extreme age. Mortar between and over the rocks sealed the space from ground water, but a few leaks allowed moisture to soak through and onto the dry floor.

The space was bare but for a few broken bits of furniture and a wall covered by a wine rack. Maggie noted an empty spot among the other bottles of bourbon. A three-foot by four-foot wide spot in the far corner was surrounded by a short, two-foot wall of rotten boards.

“My father never had a mind to make proper use of the basement, and I must confess I haven’t found an adequate use for it, either,” Adrian commented.

Maggie took a few steps ahead of him and swept her eyes over the space. Her heart sank. She turned back to him. “Then what are we doing here?”

He smiled and walked over to the short wall where he swept his hand toward the darkness. “What do you make of this?”

Maggie followed him and peeked over the edge. The walls surrounded a pit that stopped eight feet below the surface of the floor. The bottom of the pit itself was bare but for a thick layer of dust.

She shrugged. “A dungeon?”

He chuckled. “Something rather more mundane. This pit once held potatoes, and something more.”

He grabbed the wall and leapt over the side into the pit. Maggie gasped and whipped out her hand to catch him, but he disappeared into the hole. His feet hit the floor and a cloud of dust rose up around him.

His choking voice reached her. “Jump and I will catch you.”

She grasped the top of the wall and leaned over. He was six feet below her, a greater distance than she was tall. “I don’t think-” A snap and a crack, and the wall beneath her broke.

Maggie screamed as she fell headlong into the pit. The floor rushed toward her. She scrunched her eyes shut and tensed her body for impact.

A pair of strong hands caught her about the waist. Maggie peeked one eye open. She was still upside down and the floor was a half foot from the top of her head. Maggie glanced up. Adrian held her waist and grinned down at her.

“I had no idea you were so eager to join me down here,” he teased.

Maggie glared at him and thrashed in his hold. “Let me go!”

He chuckled. “As you wish.”

Adrian opened his hands. Maggie dropped the last six inches to the floor. Another cloud of dust burst from the ground and covered her. She coughed and choked as she grasped the wall and climbed to her feet.

“Do you have to be such a jerk so much?” she growled at him.
